Cancer Cases Expected to Rise 77% by 2050
The global cancer burden continues to grow with over 35 million new cases predicted for the year 2050, according to a recent report from the World Health Organization (WHO). When compared to the approximately 20 million new cancer cases that occurred in 2022, this represents a 77% increase.
Lung, breast, and colorectal cancer are currently the three most prevalent cancers, although prostate cancer replaces breast cancer in the top three for men. Lung cancer has the highest mortality rate, while breast cancer comes in fourth on the list.
The report estimates that more highly developed countries will experience some of the highest cancer incidence rates, and less developed countries will suffer higher death rates. Alongside population growth and an aging population in many countries, possible factors involved in increasing cancer rates include alcohol use, tobacco use, obesity, and air pollution.
Better screening, awareness, and healthcare options could help cut down on cancer rates in certain countries, especially less developed ones. At the individual level, lifestyle changes like eating a healthy diet, quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, and limiting alcohol intake can lower overall cancer risk.
Scent Therapy May Improve Memory Recall, Depression Symptoms
Familiar scents may help the brain to recall specific memories, a new study has found. In those with depression, this benefit of scent therapy may help individuals to get out of negative thought cycles and into more positive patterns of thinking, potentially improving depression symptoms.
Previous research has indicated that adults with depression struggle to recall precise memories. Scent therapy (also known as aromatherapy) has already shown the potential to trigger vivid memories, possibly because smells engage the amygdala, a region of the brain involved in emotion and memory.
The latest study involved 32 adults with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder. They were given either word cues or odor cues and asked to recall a specific memory. Memory recall was much stronger in response to odor cues versus word cues, and participants were also more likely to remember positive events.
Though the study specifically focused on scent therapy and memory recall in people with depression, the benefits may extend to general mood and thought improvements. In addition, many of the odors used in the study were everyday ones, including oranges and ground coffee.
